Maui United Way Offering $1,000 to Residents Impacted by Aug. 8 Wildfires

Maui United Way launched its Maui Fire Disaster Relief Fund on Aug. 18, just over a week after the devastating Aug. 8 wildfires that decimated the historic Lāhainā Town and destroyed nearly 20 homes in Kula.

The emergency financial assistance program will grant $1,000 to “adults who directly suffered a loss or damage and lived in one of the fire impact zones.” This individual relief is in addition to various donations to local nonprofits that have been helping survivors all over the island.

“While this fund only scratches the surface for impacted families, we hope these funds will help Maui’s fire survivors to purchase some of their most urgently needed items,” said Maui United Way President and Chief Professional Officer Nicholas Winfrey in a news release.

All eligible adults can apply online by filling out this request form.

Proof of residence is required. Accepted forms of identification include a government-issued photo ID, Red Cross case number, utility or other bills addressed to one’s home, or voter registration. Those who need assistance with providing this information can call 211 (translation services available) or 808-275-2000, or visit a disaster recovery center to fill out the form in person.

No current address is needed, and those who don’t have one can specify the nearest landmark or cross street from where they’re staying — even if they are completely without shelter.

Processing time may take up to 14 business days, as each request will be verified to ensure funds are being distributed to every adult who meets the criteria.

Funds will be distributed via pre-paid Visa cards, PayPal, Venmo or direct deposit to personal bank accounts.
